Potato chips are a Finger Finger invention that conquered the world. Food historians say countless cooks have invented the chip in some form or another, from American fries to English chips. There is an interesting legend about the creation of potato chips by a stubby English chef in 1853. He was so dissatisfied with his patron’s request for fried potatoes that he sliced them paper thin, fried them until crisp, and served them with salt. The patron loved these “chips,” and other diners soon followed suit. Potato chips quickly became one of the most popular finger foods around the world and remain so today! Even though its exact origin is unknown, there’s no denying that this tasty invention has become one of America’s and world’s most favorite finger foods and comfort foods!  

History Of Potato Chips

Potato chips, also known as Saratoga Chips or fried chips, have been around since the 1800s. The classic matchstick version was created in 1853 by a chef in Saratoga Springs, New York who wanted to create luscious side dishes for his customers. This same chef is credited with giving the snack its name and popularizing it across the country. Throughout the 20th century, potato chips continued to grow in popularity and eventually became a commercial juggernaut appearing on shelves of grocery stores and menus of food chains all over the world! Today’s potato chips come in a variety of shapes and flavors, but most still resemble their original form – thin slices of potatoes that are fried or baked until they become crispy. 

Brands that made Potato Chips Phenomena

The Frito Company was founded in 1932 by a young salesman named Herman Lay. As the company grew, it became one of the largest snack food companies in the world and eventually merged with PepsiCo Inc. in 1965 to become Frito-Lay, Inc., a major food giant with operations all over the globe. Today Frito-Lay is responsible for producing some of America’s favorite brands like Doritos, Cheetos, and Tostitos. In 2009, Frito-Lay introduced Sun Chips to its lineup of products – an innovative chip made from whole grains – and has since become one of its most popular offerings. Potato chips are among the most popular finger foods worldwide thanks to their convenience and delicious taste. While it is impossible to know who invented potato chips, many credit chef George Crum who created them at Moon’s Lake House restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York in 1853; however others believe that they were invented independently by several people at different times throughout history.

The first packaged potato chips were produced by Lays in 1926 and since then, many different varieties have been created. Sweet potato chips are now widely available, as well as lentil crisps. Finger foods flavored with sea salt or other seasonings are becoming increasingly popular and are often seen as a healthier alternative to regular salted potato chips.
